What Dial-Up Internet Actually Was, and Why It Sounded Like That

That screeching, hissing handshake wasn't noise for its own sake — it was two computers arguing, in real time, about how fast they could trust each other to talk.

For most of the 1990s, getting "online" meant your computer picking up a telephone. Dial-up internet used the same copper phone lines and the same infrastructure as a voice call, which is a strange thing to build a data network on top of — telephone lines were designed to carry the sound of a human voice, not the binary language of computers. The device that made the translation possible was the modem, short for modulator-demodulator, and the sound it made was that translation happening in real time, audibly, while you waited.

Why it needed to make noise at all

A modem's job is to take digital data — the 1s and 0s a computer works in — and convert it into an analog audio signal that can travel down a phone line, then do the reverse on the other end. Early modems left their speaker turned on during this process mostly as a diagnostic feature: it let a user, or a technician, hear whether the connection was progressing normally or had failed, since a stalled or garbled handshake sounded distinctly different from a successful one. That practical debugging feature is the reason an entire generation associates going online with a specific, deeply weird piece of audio.

What's actually happening in the sound

The sequence has a few identifiable stages. First, you'd hear the ordinary dial tone and the touch-tone beeps of the number being dialed, exactly like a phone call — because at that stage, it was one. Then a ring, and the sound of the other end's modem picking up. What follows is the "handshake": a burst of shifting tones and static-like hiss as the two modems negotiate the fastest, most reliable connection speed the phone line can support, testing it for noise and interference before settling on a rate. That negotiation is the source of most of the screeching and warbling people remember — it's not random noise, it's a structured back-and-forth conversation happening in a frequency range humans can hear, at a speed too fast for anyone to consciously follow.

Modem speeds crept up steadily over the era: early consumer modems in the 1980s ran at 300 bits per second, a rate at which text would visibly crawl onto the screen letter by letter. By the mid-1990s, 28.8 and 33.6 kilobits-per-second modems were standard, and by the late 1990s, 56k modems represented close to the practical ceiling of what a standard analog phone line could carry, given the physical limits of the format.

The tradeoffs everyone remembers

Because dial-up used the actual phone line, going online usually meant nobody in the house could make or receive a phone call at the same time — a genuinely disruptive tradeoff that shaped household rules and, for teenagers with a crush waiting for a callback, real anxiety. Connections could also drop without warning, downloads that took hours could be wiped out by someone picking up an extension, and pages with images loaded in visibly, top to bottom, in a way that made "the internet" feel less like a place you arrived at instantly and more like a photograph slowly developing.

Broadband technologies — cable internet and DSL, which used a different part of the phone line's frequency range than voice calls — began rolling out commercially in the late 1990s and became the mainstream default through the 2000s, finally freeing the phone line and making the connection process silent and near-instant. The handshake sound disappeared from most people's lives well over two decades ago. It has, somewhat improbably, outlived its own obsolescence as one of the most recognizable and specific sounds of an entire technological era.
