The first website ever published had no images, no navigation bar, and no idea it was making history. It was a plain page of text describing a piece of software, hosted on a single computer in a physics laboratory in Switzerland. Its address was info.cern.ch, and it went live in August 1991.
The man behind it was Tim Berners-Lee, a British software engineer working at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. Berners-Lee wasn't trying to build a global information network for its own sake — he was trying to solve a much smaller, more annoying problem. CERN had thousands of researchers cycling through on short contracts, each using different computers, different file formats, and different ways of storing data. Knowledge kept getting lost. He wanted a way for documents to link to other documents regardless of what machine they lived on.
Three inventions in one
To solve that problem, Berners-Lee didn't just build a page — he built the whole stack underneath it. By the end of 1990 he had working versions of three things that still run the web today: HTML (HyperText Markup Language, for writing pages), HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol, for requesting and sending them), and the URL (Uniform Resource Locator, the address system). He wrote and ran the first web server and the first browser, called WorldWideWeb, on a NeXT computer — the same black-cube machines Steve Jobs's company made during his years away from Apple.
The page at info.cern.ch was, fittingly, about the World Wide Web project itself. It explained what hypertext was, how to get a browser, how to set up a server, and linked out to technical documentation. There was no design to speak of — a white background, blue underlined links, the typography of whatever browser rendered it. It looked less like a homepage than a README file, because that's essentially what it was.
The announcement nobody noticed
Berners-Lee didn't hold a launch event. On August 6, 1991, he posted a short message to alt.hypertext, a Usenet newsgroup for people interested in hypertext systems, describing the WorldWideWeb project and inviting anyone curious to try it. It was a niche pitch to a niche audience. Nobody in that thread was declaring the birth of a medium that would eventually carry news, shopping, banking, and, yes, a button that generates internet nostalgia at random.
Growth was slow at first by design — the web depended on other institutions choosing to run their own servers and write their own pages, and in 1991 almost nobody had a reason to. That changed over the following few years as more universities and labs got online, and accelerated hard once graphical browsers like Mosaic arrived in 1993 and made the web usable by non-programmers.
Where it is now
The original NeXT machine that hosted the page still exists, preserved at CERN, with a sticker on it warning: "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!" The address info.cern.ch is still live. In 2013, on the 20th anniversary of CERN's decision to release the web's underlying technology royalty-free to the world, the lab restored the earliest known version of the page as closely as it could reconstruct it, so anyone can still visit something close to the exact page that started it all.
It's worth sitting with how small the ambitions were. Berners-Lee wasn't chasing scale, virality, or a business model — he was trying to stop CERN colleagues from losing each other's files. Nearly everything that followed, for better and worse, grew out of a fix for a filing problem.
