The emoji you send today, on any phone, in any country, traces back to a single designer working on a Japanese mobile network in the late 1990s, trying to solve a problem specific to pagers and early cell phones: how do you convey tone and feeling in a message when you're only allowed a tiny handful of characters?
A designer named Kurita
Shigetaka Kurita was part of the team at NTT DoCoMo, one of Japan's major mobile carriers, working on an early mobile internet platform called i-mode in the late 1990s. Text messaging and pager culture in Japan had already developed a habit of using simple symbols and emoticon-like characters to add emotional nuance to short messages, but Kurita wanted something more expressive and standardized — small pictures that could convey weather, mood, and everyday concepts at a glance, without eating up the extremely limited character space available on the devices of the era.
Around 1998 and 1999, Kurita designed a set of 176 tiny images, each built on a 12-by-12 pixel grid — small enough that the entire original set took up only a few kilobytes of data, a rounding error by today's standards but a real constraint on the hardware of the time. He drew on a mix of sources for inspiration: manga's visual shorthand for emotion, the dingbat and symbol fonts used in print typography, and the basic emoticon vocabulary — like the sideways smiley — that was already common in Japanese digital communication.
From pixels to global standard
The word "emoji" itself comes from Japanese roots meaning roughly "picture" and "character," and despite the coincidental resemblance, it isn't etymologically related to the English word "emoticon" — that's a linguistic accident, not a borrowing. Kurita's set was an immediate hit within Japan, and rival carriers quickly built their own competing emoji sets, which created a real practical headache: a message sent from one Japanese carrier's phone to another's often displayed the wrong picture, or no picture at all, because there was no shared standard behind the scenes.
That incompatibility problem is what eventually pulled emoji onto the international stage. Through the 2000s, as smartphones spread globally and companies like Apple and Google wanted to support Japanese-style emoji on their own platforms, engineers pushed to get emoji formally incorporated into Unicode — the universal standard that defines how text characters are represented consistently across every computer and phone on Earth. Once emoji were part of Unicode, starting in earnest in the early 2010s, any platform could implement the same underlying set of characters and be confident it would render correctly (if not always identically in style) on any other platform.
A tiny museum piece
The cultural recognition eventually caught up with the invention. In 2016, New York's Museum of Modern Art formally acquired Kurita's original 176-character NTT DoCoMo emoji set into its permanent design collection, treating it as a legitimate piece of design history alongside typefaces and industrial objects — an unusually fast trip from "practical workaround for a pager's character limit" to "museum piece."
What started as 176 tiny, carrier-specific pictures has since grown into a Unicode library of thousands of characters, expanded over the years to include a far broader range of skin tones, professions, foods, flags, and objects than Kurita's original set ever attempted. It's a rare case of a genuinely utilitarian fix — built to squeeze more feeling out of a character-limited pager message — becoming something close to a shared visual language, understood without translation across essentially every country with a smartphone.
