Long before most people had heard the word "internet," a smaller, scrappier version of online culture already existed — built not on a single unified network, but on thousands of independent computers that regular people dialed into directly, one at a time, often run out of somebody's spare bedroom.
The bulletin board era
The first bulletin board system, or BBS, is generally credited to Ward Christensen and Randy Suess, two members of a Chicago-area computer hobbyist group, who built and launched a system called CBBS in February 1978. A BBS worked exactly like its name suggested: a computer, connected to a phone line through a modem, that other people could call into (using their own computer and modem) to read and leave public messages, download files, and sometimes play simple text-based games — a genuine online community, just one confined to whoever happened to dial that specific number.
Through the 1980s and into the early 1990s, BBSes multiplied rapidly, run mostly by hobbyists as a labor of love rather than a business. Some connected to broader networks like FidoNet, which let messages hop between different BBSes across cities and eventually countries, creating something like a distributed, homemade precursor to internet forums. At their peak in the mid-1990s, credible industry estimates put the number of active BBSes in the tens of thousands in the United States alone, serving well over ten million users combined — a real, if fragmented, online culture that predates the mainstream web entirely.
Modems: the connection everyone shared
All of this ran over analog phone lines using modems, devices that translated a computer's digital data into audio tones that could travel down standard telephone wiring. Early consumer modems in the early 1980s operated at a crawl by modern standards — 300 bits per second was standard for a while — before a new generation of easier-to-use, auto-dialing modems, most notably the Hayes Smartmodem released in 1981, helped make the whole process more approachable for non-technical users. Speeds climbed steadily over the following decade, through 1200 and 2400 bit-per-second modems, up to the 28.8k and eventually 56k modems that were standard by the late 1990s.
The shift to the web — and then to broadband
The rise of the World Wide Web and the arrival of easy-to-use graphical browsers like Mosaic in 1993 changed the landscape fast. Rather than dialing into one specific, isolated computer at a time, users could now dial into an internet service provider and, from there, reach any website on the connected global network — a fundamentally more open system than the BBS model, and one that made the appeal of a single dial-up bulletin board fade quickly. Large consumer dial-up services like AOL, Prodigy, and CompuServe capitalized on this shift, packaging internet and web access into an easy, mass-market product, and independent BBSes declined sharply through the second half of the 1990s as a result.
The final major shift came with broadband — cable internet and DSL technologies, which used different frequency ranges than voice calls to deliver data over existing cable-TV or phone lines, freeing up the phone line entirely and offering vastly higher speeds. These began rolling out commercially in the late 1990s and became the mainstream standard through the 2000s, ending the dial-up era for most households and, with it, the distinctive modem handshake sound that had defined "getting online" for nearly two decades. What had started as isolated hobbyist computers, reachable one caller at a time, had become an always-on connection to a single, shared global network — a genuinely different way of experiencing "being online" than where the whole thing began.
