Random Letter Generator

Random letters of the alphabet, your choice of case.

Pick a case and how many letters you want. Great for games, drawing prompts, spelling practice, and quick decisions.

A random letter is a surprisingly handy thing: pick a category for a word game, choose which team goes first by drawing letters, prompt a quick creative-writing exercise, or run a classroom spelling drill. Choose uppercase, lowercase, or a mix to suit the activity.

Each letter is chosen independently from A to Z, so repeats are possible in a batch unless you generate them one at a time.

Random letters power a surprising number of games. Pick one for a round of Scattergories or the alphabet game, choose a starting letter for a category challenge, assign letters to players, or run a vocabulary exercise in a classroom. Each result uses all 26 letters with equal probability.

That equal chance is worth knowing. Letter tiles in word games are weighted so that common letters such as E and T appear more often than Q or Z, but this generator is not weighted: Z is exactly as likely as E. Choose uppercase, lowercase, or mixed case, and generate as many letters as you need.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get more than one letter?

Yes — set any count and each letter is chosen independently from A to Z.

Does it include vowels and consonants equally?

Yes, all 26 letters have an equal chance on every pick.

Are all letters equally likely?

Yes. Each of the 26 letters has the same chance of being picked, unlike tile sets in word games, which are weighted by how common each letter is in English.
