Jerry Yang and David Filo built it to keep track of websites they personally liked, organized into categories, at a time when there was no good way to find anything online. As the list outgrew casual browsing, they renamed it Yahoo and turned it into one of the web's first major directories — a human-curated map of the internet before search engines took over that job.
