Twitter's original 140-character limit came from the 160-character limit of SMS text messages.

2006

Twitter was designed to work over text messages, which were capped at 160 characters. The founders reserved 20 characters for the username and left 140 for the message. The limit stayed for more than a decade before it was doubled to 280 characters in 2017.
