The smiley emoticon :-) was proposed in 1982 so people would stop taking jokes on a message board too seriously.

Computer scientist Scott Fahlman posted the idea to a Carnegie Mellon University bulletin board on September 19, 1982, suggesting sideways-turned punctuation to flag jokes, with :-( proposed as its serious counterpart. The original post was thought lost for two decades until it was recovered from old backup tapes in 2002, letter for letter, complete with Fahlman's exact original wording.
