The listing was really just a test by founder Pierre Omidyar, who was startled when someone actually bid on it. When Omidyar emailed to check that the buyer understood the laser pointer didn't work, the reply came back that the buyer collected broken laser pointers. The site itself started life as 'AuctionWeb,' a small section tucked inside Omidyar's personal website.
