A Digital Equipment Corporation marketing rep named Gary Thuerk sent it to roughly 400 addresses on ARPANET, advertising a product demonstration for the company's new computers. Because ARPANET was a research network, not a commercial one, plenty of recipients were furious that their inboxes had been used for advertising at all — an argument about unwanted email that, in one form or another, has never really stopped.
