Ward Christensen and Randy Suess were members of a local computer hobbyist club when a huge winter storm buried Chicago and gave them the free time to finally build what they'd been talking about. Their CBBS (Computerized Bulletin Board System) ran over a single phone line at 300 bits per second — glacially slow by today's standards, but it was the ancestor of every online forum, message board, and comment section that followed.
