Stanford PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin built it to study the link structure of the web, ranking pages by how many other pages linked back to them — hence 'BackRub.' They renamed the project Google in 1997, a play on 'googol,' and incorporated the company in a friend's garage in 1998.
