Fans of The X-Files coined the term 'shipping' in the mid-1990s, arguing online that two of its lead characters belonged together.

1996

Fans who wanted the pair in a relationship first called themselves 'relationshippers' in Usenet posts, which got shortened to 'shipper' and then generalized into 'shipping.' The earliest recorded uses trace to the alt.tv.x-files newsgroup around 1996. Three decades later, 'ship' is fandom's default word for rooting for any fictional pairing, on any platform, for any show.
